NIESR Staff

The National Institute of Economic and Social Research is Britain’s longest established independent economic research institute. It specialises in applied research, combining high academic standards with relevance to policy making.

NIESR has a strong reputation for high quality academic research of policy relevance. The Institute currently employs approximately 40 staff. Research staff report to the Director, Martin Weale. Non-research staff report to the Secretary, Gill Clisham.

The research staff are divided into a number of teams specialising in various aspects of economics and social policy. NIESR encourages a collaborative approach to research and staff members present seminars to their colleagues on a regular basis.


Location and Facilities

The Institute is situated in the heart of Westminster, just off Smith Square, and within easy walking distance of several government departments and the Palace of Westminster. View/download a detailed map (PDF, 314kb).

Academic facilities include an excellent specialist library, with full-time librarian, extensive computing and meeting facilities.

Conditions of Service

Salary levels for research staff are based on academic scales but tend to be somewhat higher than equivalent grades in universities.

Annual leave is between 27-35 days, depending on grade and seniority, plus statutory public holidays.

All staff are eligible to join the Universities Superannuation Scheme or to receive a 14% contribution to a personal pension scheme of their choice.

Staff are involved in NIESR's decision-making processes through an elected Staff Consultative Committee, which meets regularly with the Director and Secretary, and through Open Meetings for all staff.
