CEO Compensation, Firm Governance and Firm Performance
Evidence from China and Policy Implications

Prompted by market forces and regulatory requirements private and state owned enterprises in China have been instituting radical reforms in the way their senior executives are compensated and the manner in which their firms are governed. These changes build on earlier efforts to hold executives accountable to shareholders whilst maximising firm performance. This workshop brings together labour economists and corporate governance specialists working in the field to present new evidence on the incidence, correlates and effects of changes in CEO compensation and governance structures in China. The workshop will assess the implications of these developments for firm governance and profitability in China, as well as comparing and contrasting them with developments elsewhere in the world.

    Financial Stability Conference “NEVER AGAIN?”

A common aim of regulatory proposals since 2008 has been a desire to avoid a recurrence of the global financial crisis. Looking particularly at the UK regulatory system in the context of Basel III, this conference evaluates whether there has been progress towards “never again” – a negligible risk of a costly future systemic crisis. Is the banking system already more robust, will current proposals make the system significantly safer or could any proposals be counter-productive, and what might be the side-effects on the economy of current regulatory proposals?
