OBTAINING WERS98 DATA

All data from WERS98 are available from the Data Archive at the University of Essex.

• The final version of the 1998 Cross-Section Survey Dataset became available from the Data Archive on 21st October 1999

• The1990-98 Panel Survey Dataset (incorporating all relevant data from the WIRS90 Cross-Section) became available on 12th November 1999.

Information on each of the datasets can be found in the on-line BIRON catalogue at the Data Archive. The Data Archive Study Numbers that are needed to find information on WERS98 through BIRON's search engine are:

• 3955 for the 1998 Cross-Section Survey.

• 4026 for the 1990-98 Panel Survey.

Study Number 33176 will produce details on all the surveys in the WIRS series.

The BIRON catalogue provides access to on-line versions of the documents that comprise the WERS98 User Guide. These documents are also available on this web-site.

When ordering WERS98 data from the Data Archive, users must register with the Data Archive. Once registered users may order the data on-line at the Data Archive's web-site under Ordering Data, and there is a direct link to this page from the 'Order' button using the on-line BIRON catalogue.

Users should note that a very small fraction of the data from WERS98 has been placed in separate files, to which access is currently restricted for reasons of confidentiality. These restricted files contain data on the regional location of the establishment and its detailed industrial activity (a broad, one-digit industrial classification is available on the general release files). Restricted data will therefore take longer to obtain than the data on general-release, since the Data Archive must seek specific permission from the data depositor before supplying a user with restricted data. Further information on each of the general and restricted files is available from the Data Archive's on-line BIRON catalogue.

WERS98 datasets are available from the Data Archive in the following different file formats:

• SPSS portable
• SAS transport
• ASCII
• STATA.

Datasets are made available via physical media (e.g. CD-ROM), through file transfer or by means of on-line access.

Users should note that the Data Archive may levy an administration charge when a dataset is ordered. This charge is dependent on the nature and sources of the user's project funding.
