Alessandro Sterlacchini (1959) is Associate Professor at the Department
of Economics of Ancona University (Italy) and teaches Industrial Economics
and Microeconomics both at the graduate and post-graduate level.
In 1983 he got the laurea in Economics & Business at the University
of Ancona and in 1987 the Master in Science, Technology and Industrialization
at SPRU, University of Sussex (UK). In 1989 he obtained the PhD in Economics
at the University of Ancona with a dissertation on ‘Technological innovation
and productivity growth: a comparison between Italy and the United Kingdom”.
His research activity has been mainly developed in the field of the Economics
of Innovation, especially by means of econometric analyses (both at industry
and firm level) on the determinants and effects of R&D and other indicators
of innovative activity. In this field he has devoted particular attention
to the innovation policy towards small and medium sized enterprises. Other
works of Alessandro Sterlacchini have been concerned with the process of
new firms’ formation and the determinants of export performance at firm level.
During the last years, his research activity has been extended to the
field of the Economics of Education with an analysis of the employment and
income prospects of the Italian university graduates. In 2001 he has co-ordinated
a field study on the adoption of Information and Communication
Technologies among Italian SMEs.
