Profile
Marcel Timmer pursued his studies in Philosophy and Econometrics at the
University of Groningen. Between 1994 and 1999 he worked as a Ph.D. student
at the Faculty of Technology Management, Eindhoven University of Technology.
Parts of the project were carried out at as a visiting researcher at the University
of New England in Armidale, the Centre for Economic and Development Studies
(PEP-LIPI) in Jakarta, the University of Science and Technology in
Cochin and the Institute of Economic Growth in Delhi. Since 1999 Marcel is
back with the Groningen Growth and Development Centre at the Faculty of Economics
of Groningen University, where he teaches general economics, development
theories, economic history and methodology. From April 1, 2000, Marcel has
been employed as a research fellow on a post-doctoral fellowship granted
by the Dutch Science Foundation. The 3-year roject "Patterns of Investment
and Knowledge Spillovers in Industrializing Countries" is part of the research
programme "The Impact of Technology Diffusion and Spillovers on Growth",
simply called the TEG project. This programme is carried out by researchers
at the Eindhoven University of Technology, Maastricht University and the
University of Groningen. Dr. Timmer is also affiliated with SOM, the Groningen
research school on “Systems, Organization and Management”. His current research
interests include the proces of economic growth and structural change, international
comparisons of productivity and the role of technology transfers and
diffusion in catch-up, with a special emphasis on Asia.
