Labour market issues, with a particular emphasis in employment relations.
John has co-authored three books arising from his work on the series of Workplace Employment Relations Surveys: All Change at Work?, which examined changes in employment relations practice in Britain over the period 1980 to 1998; Inside the Workplace, which reported detailed findings from the 2004 survey; and The Evolution of the Modern Workplace, which explores changes over the quarter century from 1980-2004. Other publications in the broad area of employment relations have focused on topics such as pay determination and ‘high involvement’ management practices, with a particular emphasis on the role of trade unions.
Another part of John’s research has focused on the quantitative analysis of gender issues and equal opportunities more generally. This work includes investigations of the links between equal opportunities, employees’ attitudes and business performance for the DTI and DWP. It also includes a substantial report on the gender pay gap for the DfES and Cabinet Office. John’s past research for government departments and agencies has also included survey-based studies of flexible working arrangements, maternity benefits and pension provision.
A third strand of John’s work has focused on the issues of skills and productivity. This has included: a major study for the DTI, DfES and HM Treasury of the extent to which information and communication technologies (ICTs) and workforce skills contribute to company performance in Britain; a large-scale analysis of the Employer Skills Surveys for the DfES; and studies of the impact of the National Minimum Wage on business competitiveness for the Low Pay Commission.
