Sir Charles Bean

Sir Charles Bean is a Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics and a member of the Budget Responsibility Committee at the Office for Budget Responsibility.

Employment

Prior to Charles’ current role as a Professor of Economics at the London School of EconomicsĀ  he held the position as the Executive Director and Chief Economist at the Bank of England from 2000 to 2014, and then Deputy Governor for Monetary Policy, and was a member of the Monetary Policy and Financial Policy Committees. Before joining the Bank of England, he was a member of faculty at LSE and was Managing Editor of the Review of Economic Studies; he has also worked at HM Treasury. He was President of the Royal Economic Society from 2013 to 2015 and was knighted in 2014 for services to monetary policy and central banking. Charlie attended Emmanuel College, Cambridge (BA First Class Honours in Economics and Mathematics 1975, MA 1979) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (PhD 1981, Harkness Fellow 1979 to 1980). He served on the Institute Council of Management for 20 years.
