Press Release: Professor Nicholas Crafts FBA appointed new Chair of NIESR’s Council of Management

The National Institute of Economic and Social Research has appointed Professor Nicholas Crafts as Chair of its Council of Management. Professor Crafts takes over from Professor Diane Coyle OBE, who will remain a Governor of the Institute.

NIESR Director Jagjit Chadha said:

“With Diane as Chair the Institute has come so far in the past four years and we will always be grateful for her support, accordingly I am delighted to announce her appointment as an Honorary Fellow of NIESR. That said I cannot imagine a better person to take the baton than Nick Crafts, whose wide-sweeping, yet profoundly scholarly knowledge of economic history and current policy issues, will help drive the Institute’s direction as the country’s leading independent research institute.”

Professor Crafts said:

“It is an honour to be elected to this role. NIESR’s high-quality policy-relevant research is even more important in these difficult times. I look forward to working with the other trustees, the Director and all the Institute’s staff to further its unique contribution to the policy community.”

Notes for editors:

Nicholas Crafts CBE FBA is Professor of Economic History (0.3FTE) at the University of Sussex.  He is also Emeritus Professor of Economic History, University of Warwick where he was Director of CAGE, the ESRC Research Centre on Competitive Advantage in the Global Economy from 2010 to 2019.

He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge and his earlier career included faculty positions at Oxford University and the London School of Economics and visiting appointments at UC Berkeley and Stanford University.  At various times, he has been a consultant for HM Treasury, International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. 

He was President of the Economic History Society from 2004 to 2007 and is President-Elect of the Royal Economic Society for 2022/23.  His research interests centre on the long-run economic performance of the British economy.  His latest book is Forging Ahead, Falling Behind, Fighting Back: British Economic Growth from the Industrial Revolution to the Financial Crisis (Cambridge University Press, 2018).
