NIESR Welcomes Professor Huw Dixon as Research Lead for Economic Measurement

The National Institute of Economic and Social Research is delighted to announce the appointment of Huw Dixon, a NIESR Fellow and Professor of Economics at Cardiff Business School, who joins today as Research Lead for Economic Measurement. Professor Dixon will further strengthen NIESR’s research team and be primarily focused on producing resilient measures of outputs and prices that are able to capture our rapidly changing economy.

Huw graduated from his first degree in Philosophy and Economics from Balliol College, University of Oxford, and went on to do his PhD at Nuffield College, University of Oxford under the supervision of Nobel Laureate Sir James Mirrlees. Described as one of Europe’s leading economists, he was a Fellow of the CEPR from 1991–2001, a member of the Royal Economic Society Council (1996–2001), and a Research Fellow of the Centre for Economic Studies Ifo (Munich) since 2000. He has written extensively on his varied research interests and been published in a number of leading academic journals, as well as contributed to a number of separate publications and conferences.  In 2001 his book “Surfing Economics” was published.

Professor Huw Dixon said: “I am delighted to join NIESR to take the lead on economic measurement which has again come to the centre of economic science as we have to grapple with understanding and measuring rapidly changing economies. Economic measurement is currently full of challenges and calls upon us to be creative to solve these challenges.”

Welcoming Huw Dixon to NIESR, Prof Jagjit Chadha, Director of NIESR, said: “Our gruelling year under the pandemic has underlined once again the importance of understanding economic and social developments.  And yet when activities, products or services change rapidly, conventional economic measurement can be quite misleading.  The Institute has been at the centre of the economic measurement question since its inception, frequently working closely with the ONS, and so we are excited to welcome Huw to NIESR and look forward to working with him on developing a range of measures that can respond to our ever-changing national circumstances.”
