Press Release: Queen’s Birthday Honour for NIESR’s Director

We are delighted to announce that our Director, Professor Jagjit S. Chadha, has been awarded Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to Economics and to Economic Policy.

Jagjit joined as Director of NIESR in May 2016 from his position as Professor and Chair in Money and Banking in the School of Economics at the University of Kent. Previous academic appointments include Professor of Economics at the University of St Andrews and Fellow at Clare College, Cambridge. He has also worked at the Bank of England, at BNP Paribas, and has served as Chair of the Money, Macro, Finance Study Group.

Recognised as a leading expert on financial markets, monetary policy, and key aspects of economic history, he has acted as Specialist Adviser to the House of Commons Treasury Committee and as an academic adviser to both the Bank of England and HM Treasury, as well as to many central banks and the Bank for International Settlements. He has written widely on the design of monetary, fiscal and financial policies, sits on the Council of the Royal Economics Society (RES), is a founding editor of the Economics Observatory and a member of the Strategic Advisory Network (SAN) for the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). He sits on Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 Panel for Economics and Econometrics.

Commenting on the award, Jagjit said:

“From under the long shadow of the Covid-19 pandemic, I am pleased to have been able to contribute, with the work of the National Institute of Economic and Social Research, to the understanding of our economy and towards the achievement of better economic policies for all.  While the pandemic did not cause all our economic woes, it has exposed many of our previous failings.  If we can continue to improve the influence of economic science on policy, I will be proud of my work and that of my colleagues in the economics community.”
