Summary & aims

A recent report from the Women & Equalities Committee suggests some public sector professionals’ lack a sufficient understanding of trans issues. This research seeks to better understand the extent to which issues around gender identity and gender variance currently feature within children and families social worker education, in order to provide recommendations regarding the need for additional materials in the future.

Methods

This research will comprise of interviews with:

  • Key stakeholders in regard to social work education and trans equality.
  • Leads of HCPC-approved social work courses within Higher Education Institutions in England.
  • Principal Child and Family Social Workers from Local Authorities in England.

It will also include a review of literature, as well as a content analysis of social worker intial education and ongoing training.

Timescale and funder

The project is funded by the Department for Education. It was completed in December 2017.
