We know that low-income households are hit hardest by the rising prices of necessities, as products such as food and energy disproportionately dominate their household budgets. With expenditures rising and incomes falling, what many households have left over at the end of the month is getting smaller or disappearing altogether as they have to dip into their savings to pay the bills.

Rising prices and higher taxes are squeezing household budgets. For 2022-23 we estimate that 1.5 million households across the UK face food and energy bills greater than their disposable income, with the highest incidence in London and Scotland. Max Mosley, economist with our Public Policy team, looks at the cost of living crisis:
