With the Energy Price Guarantee (EPG) - now ending in April 2023, how will households be supported with their rising energy bills?  What can the government do to help those most vulnerable and hardest hit, whilst also ensuring that it is as cost effective to the taxpayer as possible?  Could it also be used to incentivise a change in energy use, contribute towards the drive to net zero and spur economic growth?

This event discussed some of the options that could be considered as part of the planned review and proposals.  Led by Professor Thiemo Fetzer, with input from economists at NIESR (who recently proposed a variable energy price cap) and a panel discussion, we explored how the current energy crisis may be an opportunity to build a stronger, healthier, fairer & more sustainable society that cuts carbon emissions and removes the widespread dependency on foreign energy supplies.

The panel included Jagjit Chadha (NIESR), Adrian Pabst (NIESR), Thiemo Fetzer (Warwick University) and Benjamin Moll (LSE)

Professor Alison Park, ESRC’s Interim Executive Chair, said:

The ESRC Festival of Social Science offers a fascinating insight into some of the country’s leading social science research and its relevance to individuals, society and the economy.  This year we are celebrating the festival’s 20th birthday with hundreds of free events across the UK, including at the National Institute of Economic and Social Research. We hope the events are enjoyable and inspiring.”
